A new addition to the Hugo Range, Johnny’s block shiraz is sourced from the oldest shiraz vines on the Hugo estate planted by John Hugo in 1969. These old gnarly vines are hand-picked and hand sorted and consistently produce wines of depth, intensity and generous mouthfeel while still having fine soft tannins. While this fruit is typically destined for Hugo’s Reserve Shiraz, Johnny’s block is a modern take on McLaren Vale shiraz spending less time in oak and showing more fruit characters.
Estate Grown 51 year old Shiraz vines.
This block produces the most intense fruit on the property and is consistently used to make the Reserve Shiraz.
Using grapes sourced from Hugo’s Reserve Shiraz block we have decided to make a fresher style shiraz to show the characteristics of this single site.
Fermentation 6 days over skins and matured in older French oak hogsheads for 11 months.
Careful Barrel selection then used for final wine
